After the Canadian Open last August, Zhang Shuai was off the tour for six months before resuming in February 2024. This season, in singles, she competed in Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, and Wimbledon but has yet to register her first win. In doubles, she reached the final at Birmingham, semis at Stuttgart, Nottingham, Palermo, and competed in the Olympics partnering Yuan Yue. Despite of her current ranking of No. 685, she has notched wins against Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Garbine Muguruza, Sloane Stephens, Caroline Wozniacki, Madison keys, and Naomi Osaka, in the past. She is also a silver medalist in women's singles at the All China Games in 2017 and Asian Games in 2018. She is a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, winning the 2019 Australian Open and the 2021 US Open alongside Samantha Stosur. Zhang Shuai last competed here at the Hong Kong Tennis Open in 2018 where she reached the semifinals.
