Fifth seed Anna Blinkova was leading 6-4 2-6 5-1 when Yulia Putintseva was forced to retire due an injury. Blinkova, world ranked No. 37, will next face Priscilla Hon for a place in the quarterfinals.

Top seed and former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka unfortunately had to retire due to a leg injury at one-set all 6-2 3-6 against the 2021 US Open finalist. Leylah Fernandez: “This was a tough match from the beginning. This week is going to be exciting for me, it’s my first time here in Hong Kong and I’m enjoying myself. I haven’t been out yet because of the typhoon situation, but we do have plans to go out later hopefully and try out some restaurants.”
Eudice Chong was unable to serve out the second set at 5-4 and then pulled up lame after trying to run down a drop shot in the eleventh game. Priscilla Hon broke serve again to take the set and the match 7-5 7-5. Hon: “I’m sorry she had to end it like that. I’m just happy to get the win.”
